Just a few kilometres from the holiday homes in Nymindegab and Hvide Sande you will find the hundeskov at Nymindegab. A hundeskov is a Danish institution and one of the best things about bringing your dog to Denmark: a fenced stretch of forest where your dog is allowed to run loose and off the lead, always under your supervision and control, of course.

The site covers around 6 hectares, roughly eight football pitches, and offers plenty of room for your four legged friend to play, run and explore. Benches and shaded spots along the way give you both somewhere to catch your breath. There is a car park directly in front of the entrance, which makes getting here easy. The access road is signposted, so simply follow the signs marked Hundeskov.

The beautiful nature around Nymindegab invites you to keep walking afterwards, which means a visit to the hundeskov combines perfectly with a trip out to the fjord or down to the beach.

Facilities at the Entrance

Everything you need is right at the gate, which is not something you can say about every hundeskov in Denmark.

• Parking: Free car park directly in front of the entrance

• Seating: Picnic table and bench set at the car park

• Toilet: There is a toilet at the parking area, genuinely useful if you are combining the visit with a longer walk in the plantation

• Fencing: The whole area is enclosed, so your dog can be let off the lead safely inside

Bring your own poo bags and, if you can, carry them back out with you. Bins have not always been reliably available here and nobody wants to be the person who leaves a bag by the gate.

Do Not Confuse It with the Hundeskov at Nørre Nebel

This trips up a lot of visitors, so it is worth being precise. There are two hundeskove in the 6830 postcode area and they are very different.

The one you want is at Søndre Klintvej, in Blåbjerg Klitplantage near Nymindegab. It is the larger of the two at around 6 hectares, with the varied dune and heather terrain described above. Coming from Vesterhavsvej, it is the first entrance on Sønder Klitvej.

The other one sits just outside Nørre Nebel itself, with the car park entrance from Klintingvej, opposite number 80. It is a small forest of roughly 1.4 hectares, about the size of two football pitches, with a little lake.

If your navigation gives you Nørre Nebel as the town, double check you are heading for Søndre Klintvej and not Klintingvej.

Danish Off Lead Rules Worth Knowing

Here is the context that makes a hundeskov so valuable if you are staying on the west coast with a dog.

On Danish beaches, dogs must be kept on a lead from 1 April to 30 September. From 1 October to 31 March, your dog may run free on the beach as long as it stays under your control. That means throughout the entire main holiday season, the beach at Nymindegab is a lead only affair.

In Danish forests the general rule is that dogs stay on a lead year round. The exceptions are the officially designated hundeskove, which is exactly what this fenced area is. So between April and September, this forest is one of very few places in the neighbourhood where your dog can genuinely stretch its legs at full speed.

Plan accordingly. Many of our guests build a daily rhythm around it: hundeskov in the morning when it is quiet, beach walk on the lead in the afternoon.

Combine It with a Walk Around Nymindegab

The hundeskov sits in the middle of one of the most interesting corners of the west coast, so it is worth building a half day around it.

Blåbjerg Klitplantage stretches out around you. Blåbjerg itself is one of the highest points on this stretch of coast and the climb to the top rewards you with a view across dune, forest and sea in one sweep. Dogs are welcome on the lead throughout the plantation.

Nymindegab Strand is a short drive away, wide, quiet and far less busy than the beaches further north.

Nymindegab Museum tells the story of the fishing community that worked this coast before the harbour at Hvide Sande existed. A good option when the weather turns.

Getting There From Your Esmark Holiday Home

From Nymindegab you are there in a couple of minutes. From Houstrup and Nørre Nebel it is a short hop of well under ten minutes. From Bork Havn allow around 15 minutes around the southern end of the fjord, and from Hvide Sande or Bjerregård roughly 25 to 35 minutes straight down the Holmsland Klit.

If you are staying further south around Henne Strand or Vejers Strand, the drive is around 20 to 30 minutes and pairs nicely with a trip up the coast.
