Sönderho: Fanö's secret main attraction
The small village of Sönderho is located in the south of Fanö directly on the Danish Wadden Sea. Fanö can be reached from the mainland via Esbjerg can be easily reached within 12 minutes by car ferry. In contrast to the holiday resorts Rindby and Nordby, Sönderho is a little off the beaten track on the North Sea island and therefore offers plenty of peace and relaxation. The fantastic location and the wild dunes and beaches contribute to the idyllic character of this picturesque holiday resort.

Most of Sönderho's houses date back centuries, perfectly capturing the former charm of the fishing village as an important trading centre in Jutland. You can experience real history as you wander through the small streets of the village and perhaps stop off at a cosy restaurant. Nowadays, the inhabitants of Sönderho are trying to bring back the time-honoured splendour of the old fishery and make the old harbour navigable again for smaller ships.
Culture on Fanö: Sönderho's most popular sights
Historic Sönderho in the south of the island offers countless opportunities to make your holiday exciting and varied. Thanks to the many sights on Fanö, you can learn a lot about the different aspects of Sönderho's history and follow the development of the island town over the last few centuries. For example, you can visit Sönderho Church and the maritime monument in the new cemetery or take a look at Sönderho's old mill. And if you need a change from the cultural programme, you can hike the Wadden Sea at low tide and go on a seal safari!
Sønderho Kirke
Sönderhos Kirke (church) is one of the special landmarks of the fishing village. The maritime character of Sönderho is also reflected here, as the interior of the church is decorated with 15 ships in the form of sculptures and paintings. The building was erected in 1782 in the traditional style and still shines in all its splendour today.

Æ Kåver
Æ Kåver is the oldest navigation mark in Denmark. It dates back to 1624 and guided sailing ships safely into the Knudedyb tidal channel. The marker collapsed due to a storm in 1935, but has been on display again as a replica since 2011. It is located in the Kaaverbjerget nature reserve in the south of Sönderho.
Sönderhos Mill
The Sönderhos mill also has its own history: built in 1895 according to Dutch models, it was in operation for several decades. To save it from subsequent demolition, the mill was bought by the painter Heinrich Dohm and the journalist Niels Jerne in 1928 and restored several times. Today, the mill still stands in the north of Sönderho and bears witness to the history of agriculture on Fanö. As a museum, it is now open to visitors and offers an insight into the farming and ploughing methods of the past.
