GIVSKUD ZOO ZOOTOPIA

GIVSKUD ZOO ZOOTOPIA is one of Denmark's most exciting animal parks and a brilliant day out for the whole family. With one ticket you get a zoo, a safari park and a dinosaur park in one. Drive your own car on safari or hop on the Safari Bus and get close to wild animals in large, natural landscapes. Then explore Denmark's biggest collection of life-size dinosaurs on foot, an adventure kids and grown-ups love just as much.

Many Danes still call the park by its old name, Løveparken. It opened in 1969 as Denmark's first lion park, where families drove their own cars among free-roaming lions. More than half a century later, the lions are still the big highlight.

Go on safari and see wild animals up close

At Givskud Zoo a very special safari is waiting for you. Drive through the park's large safari areas in your own car, or climb aboard the Safari Bus, where the guide shares facts and stories about the animals along the way. The Safari Bus needs a separate bus ticket on top of your admission.

The route takes you through several safari areas with animals from South America, North America and Africa. You might meet alpacas, American bison, antelopes, zebras and giraffes, and sometimes they wander right across the road in front of you. Out here, the animals have right of way.

Before the safari ends, you pass the African savannah, where rhinos and wildebeest roam the open plains. Then comes the grand finale: the lions. They sometimes pad curiously right up to your car, so keep your windows closed and enjoy the view.

Explore the dinosaur park

When you visit Givskud Zoo, the dinosaurs are already included in your ticket. Here you'll find Denmark's largest dinosaur park with more than 40 life-size dinosaurs.

A walk through the dinosaur park feels like travelling millions of years back in time, exciting and educational at the same time. Several of the giants move and make sounds, which makes the experience extra thrilling, whether you're a child, a grown-up or simply a dino fan.

So many animal encounters

The zoo itself is home to more than 700 animals from over 70 species. Follow the paths through the park and meet everything from Humboldt penguins and gorillas to Asian elephants and giant otters. At the penguin area you can watch them dive and play from underwater windows, and along the way you'll also meet spectacled bears, wolves and camels.

You'll also see animals you won't find in many other places in Denmark, which makes the visit exciting for young and old. Keep an eye on the daily feeding times (fodring) posted in the park, they're some of the best moments of the day. Want to meet a giraffe at eye level? The number of spots each day is limited, so book it early.

Around a third of the species at Givskud Zoo are endangered, and the zoo takes part in European breeding programmes. A small part of every ticket goes to Givskud Zoo Naturfond, which supports nature conservation projects around the world.

A day in nature with plenty of room to play and relax

Givskud Zoo is much more than a classic zoo. It's a place where the whole family can spend a lovely day surrounded by nature. Besides the wild animals and the dinosaurs, the park has several playgrounds, activity areas, trampolines and cosy picnic spots, where you can take a break and just enjoy being together.

Do as Danish families do and pack a proper madpakke (packed lunch). There's a covered barbecue hut with a gas grill you can use for free, but bringing your own grill isn't allowed. Parents with little ones can use the Babycare Center near the playground. And bring sturdy shoes or gummistøvler (wellies), as some paths get muddy after a rainy day.

Dogs aren't allowed on the Safari Bus, in the lion enclosure or in walk-in enclosures where you get close to animals such as lemurs and Barbary macaques. Signs in the park show where dogs can't go, and there's a dog-sitting area next to the lion enclosure.

Meet the author – Kathrine Frydendahl Høj

I was born and grew up in Hvide Sande. But I also lived in Aarhus while I was studying marketing economics. I hadn't quite finished my studies before I moved back to Hvide Sande, so it was ideal to commute to Herning to study a part-time Bachelor's degree in International Trade and Marketing. I graduated from the University of Applied Sciences in January 2023 and have been working at Esmark ever since, being part of a wonderful team with great colleagues. I like to spend my free time with my family and friends.
