Holiday homes on Holmsland Klit

Holmsland Klit - a more than 40 km long headland that separates the Ringköbing Fjord from the North Sea as a natural dyke. An extensive and not least beautiful natural area that provides the perfect setting for an unforgettable holiday Holiday in a holiday home in Denmark on the Danish west coast. In addition to the impressive nature of Holmsland Klit, there is a lot to discover and experience here.
Holmsland Klit - the unique nature of the Danish west coast between the North Sea and the fjord
The Danish North Sea is a unique nature experience for the whole family. The holiday area of Holmsland Klit is one of the highlights. The elongated dune landscape was created by the interplay of sea currents, sand and westerly winds. This has created large dunes that are up to 25 metres high. The locals like to call the dunes "hawbjerge" - sea mountains. In addition to pure, white sandy landscapes, the majority of the dunes are overgrown with marram grass and beach rye. The vegetation is very important because it prevents the dunes from being blown further inland by the westerly wind. In terms of landscape, it creates an interplay of colours and impressions - the unique nature of the Danish west coast.

Historical sights
If you are interested in history and culture, you can follow in the historical footsteps of Danish seafaring in Holmsland Klit. At the narrowest point of the headland in the south of Holmsland Klit, between Argab and Haurvig, The old wooden constructions built by the sailors can still be seen in the beautiful dune landscape near the North Sea.
There have always been many seafarers travelling on the wild North Sea, but back then there were no modern navigation systems, which led to hundreds of ships capsizing and running aground because they misjudged their position in the sea. This necessitated the construction of tall and stately wooden structures along the west coast to help mariners find their way on the open and rough seas.

There is a small local history museum in Haurvig. "Abeline's Gaard" is a square farm built between 1854 and 1871 by a bailiff in the typical West Jutland style. The well-preserved farm is still furnished as it used to be and gives a very interesting picture of what life was like on the west coast in the "old days.
Back then, people lived on the farm from the animals they had room for in the barn to support themselves - a few cows, a few pigs and a lot of chickens. Otherwise, people lived from farming, sheep farming and fishing. The beach bailiffs kept watch on the beach and were the sailors' helpers in the event of a shipwreck.

The Nørre Lyngvig lighthouse is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the northern part of Holmsland Klit. It has a total height of 53 metres (including the dune on which the lighthouse stands) above sea level, making it the highest lighthouse on the island and Denmark's highest lighthouse. To reach the top of the lighthouse, you first have to climb 228 steps. The climb can be a bit strenuous, but it's worth it because the view over Holmsland Klit, the fjord, the sea and the large protected dune area is unique.
The reason for the construction of Lyngvig Fyr was a tragic accident on the Danish North Sea in which 24 sailors lost their lives. Construction began in 1903. It was put into operation for the first time on 3 November 1906, making it not only the tallest but also the oldest lighthouse in Denmark. The protective beams of the lighthouse sent their light out over the sea and dunes every night to help sailors navigate safely into the harbour. The light of the Lyngvig lighthouse is still a great joy for the residents of Holmsland Klit and their holiday guests today.

Stranded shipwrecks became street names
The many strandings and shipwrecks on the west coast have left their mark on the area along the North Sea. Throughout the area of Holmsland Klit, you will come across very special street names such as: Dokata-, Kania-, Janna- and Minervavej in Hvide Sande and Beauty-, Arvid-, Henriette-, Aurora- and Rebekkavej in Bjerregård, which all originate from stranded shipwrecks.
However, the streets are not only named after stranded ships, but also after people who have a special connection to the area around Holmsland Klit. In Bjerregard you will find, for example, the street P. Chr. Dahlsvej, named after the beach bailiff Peder Chr. Dahl from Gl.
