Where does the name Hvide Sande come from?
On the 35 km long headland, the Holmsland Klit, the high dune massifs once stretched from the sea to the fjord. The high dunes, which were piled up by the wind, were devoid of vegetation and could be used as landmarks by fishermen when the sun was shining.
This is where the original name "Æ Hwi' Såend", meaning white beach, comes from. The name "Hvide Sande" was first used by the hydraulic engineering office as the name of the workplace at the canal and the lock building.
Later, of course, this became the name of the town, which developed over time. Today the dunes are built on, but their special character and the shining edge towards the Ringkøbing fjord can still be seen on a sunny and clear morning from the black hills at Ringkøbing.

The history of the fishing town
Hvide Sande is a charming and authentic harbour town. It lies in the middle of the Holmsland Klit and, with its large fishing harbour, forms the natural centre for the whole area.
The modern Hvide Sande came into being in 1931 as a settler community in the area of the newly built drainage lock, when fishermen from all over the west coast began to use the area around the harbour lock as a base for the lucrative North Sea fishing industry. In just a few years, a fish auction and businesses for catering and servicing the fishing boats were established, while at the same time more and more fishing families settled in the area.
From the highest dune, the "Troldbjerg", you have a beautiful view over the whole city. Stairs and a wheelchair-accessible path lead up to the top. From here you can see the harbour entrance, the entire harbour area and Ringkobing Fjord with the new and impressive pier and the beautiful sandy beaches on the North Sea.

There are good fish shops in the harbour that always have freshly caught fish on offer. There are also cosy restaurants and ice cream parlours as well as good shopping opportunities. Throughout the year, a wide variety of events are organised for visitors to the town, with fish taking centre stage. One of the most popular and most visited is the weekly fish auction for tourists, which takes place every year in July and the first half of August.
Here you have the opportunity to experience a real auction atmosphere and bid on the freshly caught fish yourself in family-friendly portions.
The annual Herring festival "Sildefestival Hvide Sande” is also a recurring event that attracts anglers from all over Europe. If you are a keen angler, Hvide Sande is the perfect holiday destination for you. Find tips and ideas for your next Fishing holiday and the Herring Festival.
