Why a holiday home on the Danish North Sea coast is something special
The Danish North Sea coast, which locals call Vesterhavet, stretches all the way from the Wadden Sea in the south to Skagen at the very tip of Jutland. What makes it special: there are no beach entry fees, no tourist tax, no rows of rented sun loungers and no fenced off bathing sections. The beaches belong to everyone. You park at your holiday home, walk over the dune and a wide, often empty sandy beach opens up in front of you. That feeling of space, freedom and unspoilt nature is exactly why so many guests come back to the Danish west coast year after year.
The North Sea here is wild and gentle at the same time. The strong breeze, the changing tides and the long summer sunsets over the water are not just beautiful to watch, they are proper rest for body and mind. The salty sea air is good for your skin and airways, and a long beach walk gives you exactly the kind of tiredness that ends in deep, peaceful sleep. Back at the sommerhus, the wood burner and a warm drink finish the day the Danish way.

Esmark has been local for over 60 years, from Römö to Thorsminde
What sets Esmark apart from many other holiday home agencies is our real presence on the coast. We have nine service offices right in the most important holiday home areas on the Danish North Sea coast:
In Söndervig, Hvide Sande and Bjerregärd on Holmsland Klit, between the North Sea and Ringköbing Fjord. In Houstrup, Henne Strand, Vejers Strand and Blävand in southern West Jutland. And on the Wadden Sea islands of Fanö and Römö. That means we know every holiday home personally, check the quality regularly and are close by if you have a question or need something during your stay. This local knowledge is why we can tell you honestly how close the beach really is, whether the path runs over a sandy dune or a firm track, and which house suits you best in your favourite area.
Find a holiday home right on the North Sea beach
In our search you choose your preferred distance to the beach with a simple filter. That way you'll find a holiday home on the North Sea coast in exactly the location you're dreaming of.
Holiday homes in the dunes, first dune row right by the sea
If you really want to live right by the sea, choose a house in the first dune row, what Danes call første klitrække. You open the door, follow a short sandy path and you're at the water's edge. You'll find these locations especially often in Houvig, Klegod, Bjerregärd, Vejers Strand and on Römö. These houses are booked up quickly in summer, so it pays to book early.

Spend your dream holiday with Esmark in a holiday home in the dunes, where many of our houses are just a stone's throw from the beach and the sea.
Close to the beach
A little further back you often get the best of both worlds: close to the sea, but in a more sheltered spot. Houses in Söndervig, Henne Strand, Blävand and on Fanö are frequently in this kind of location. The beach is within easy walking distance, and you still have a peaceful garden without constant wind, perfect for a barbecue or morning coffee in the sun.
Beach and fjord on your doorstep
A special feature of the area around Hvide Sande, Bjerregärd and Nörre Lyngvig: you stay on Holmsland Klit, a narrow strip of land with the North Sea on one side and Ringköbing Fjord on the other. Both are only a few minutes away. It's ideal if you love surfing, kitesurfing or fishing, because the fjord offers flatter, calmer water while the North Sea brings the big waves. For families, the shallow fjord shore is a safe place for the youngest to paddle.

The best beaches on the Danish North Sea coast
Blävand and Henne Strand
Blävand marks the westernmost point of Denmark. The beach is wide, white and fine grained, and south of the village the water is especially shallow, making it ideal for families with small children. This is also where the Wadden Sea National Park begins as you head south. Henne Strand has a lively holiday atmosphere, with shops and cafés set right among the dunes and the beach just beyond the village centre.
Söndervig and Hvide Sande
Söndervig is known for its wide sandy beach and the annual Sand Sculpture Festival. Just to the south, Hvide Sande is a working fishing harbour. Buy fresh fish straight from the harbour, try your luck from the pier.
Fanö and Römö
The Wadden Sea islands of Fanö and Römö have some of the widest beaches in Europe. On Römö, Sönderstrand and Lakolk are so wide at low tide that the sea seems far away, perfect for land yachting, kite flying and endless walks, and you can even drive onto the beach. Fanö is a short ferry crossing from Esbjerg and feels like another world, with old captains' houses in Sönderho and the calm around Nordby.
Vejers Strand and Bjerregärd
Vejers Strand is one of the beaches where you can drive your car right onto the sand, which makes it especially practical for families with lots of beach gear. Bjerregärd lies further north on Holmsland Klit and is a favourite among regular guests, thanks to its high dunes and a beach that stays quiet even in high season.
Beach safety, tides and how to behave on the North Sea coast
The North Sea is beautiful, but it has its own rules. Unlike the calmer waters on Denmark's east coast, there are noticeable tides here, strongest in the Wadden Sea in the south. Rip currents can also occur close to the shore.

During the season, always watch the flags on beaches with lifeguards: red and yellow flags mark the area watched by lifeguards, a yellow flag means take care and a red flag means no swimming. Never swim further out than you can safely swim back, keep away from the groynes (høfder) and follow the advice of TrygFonden Kystlivredning, the Danish coastal lifeguard service, which runs lifeguard towers on many beaches. You'll find all the important rules in one clear list on our page about bathing safety.
Beach holidays with your dog
For many guests, the Danish North Sea coast is the perfect destination because dogs are welcome here too. From 1 April to 30 September dogs must be kept on a lead on Danish beaches. Outside that period, your dog may run freely on most beaches, as long as it comes back when called. Many of our dog friendly holiday homes are close to wide, dog friendly beaches, for example in Houvig, at southern Vejers Strand and on Römö. You can find holiday homes with a fenced garden directly with our filter.
Getting to the Danish North Sea coast
Getting here is easy. If you're travelling within Denmark, the west coast is a comfortable drive from Aarhus, Odense or Copenhagen, with the Great Belt Bridge taking you across from Zealand. From Germany, you cross the border at Padborg or Kruså and follow the motorway north along the west side of Jutland. If you're flying in, Billund Airport is the closest international airport to our holiday home areas, and from there it's a short drive by hire car to the coast.
