Illusion & Science: Experiment, Play and Learn in Thyborøn

IlluScience is an interactive museum where science and illusion merge in a way you will not find anywhere else on the Danish west coast. Here you step into a world of optical illusions, 3D art, VR experiences and the fascinating AR sandbox, where the landscapes you shape with your own hands come to life. You can explore the inverted room, sneak past invisible obstacles in the Laser Maze and let yourself be fooled by anamorphic artworks that play tricks on your senses.

Across 500 m² and more than 50 interactive exhibits there is always something new to discover. The museum is constantly being developed, with new installations added that challenge and entertain children and adults of every age.

Planning Your Visit

Allow around two hours. That is enough time to work through the exhibits without rushing, and children usually want a second run at the Laser Maze before they leave.

The museum sits indoors from start to finish, which makes it one of the most reliable options on the coast when the wind comes in off the Vesterhavet and the beach is not an option. Note that IlluScience is a seasonal attraction and closed for parts of the low season, so check the current opening hours before you set off. There is parking on site, though the number of spaces is limited, and hot and cold drinks are served inside. In high season there is only limited room to eat food you have brought with you.

The drive is part of the day out. From the holiday home areas in the south you follow the coastal road 181 north through Husby, Fjand and Thorsminde, then across Harboøre Tange, the narrow strip of land where the North Sea and the Limfjord almost meet. It is one of the most striking drives in Denmark, with water on both sides of the car for long stretches.

Thyborøn itself is worth the extra hour. The town is a working fishing port at the very tip of the tange, and within a few minutes of IlluScience you will find Sneglehuset, the house covered entirely in seashells, along with the harbour, the fish auction and the ferry across the channel to Agger and Thy.
