It's only about one kilometre to the wide Sönderstrand – a walk of around ten minutes, and you're standing on one of the most impressive sandy beaches in Northern Europe.

Set right at the edge of the Wadden Sea, the area is a paradise for bird lovers – fittingly, the street is named after a native bird of prey. From the nearby Spidsbjerg viewpoint, the island's highest point, your gaze sweeps far across dunes and heath.

For active days there's cycling, kite-flying or land sailing along the endlessly wide beach. Golf fans reach the 18-hole golf course near Havneby in just a few minutes, while the nearby harbour at Havneby offers cosy restaurants and the ferry to Sylt.
