Holiday Homes on Raketvejen – Between Dunes, Forest and the North Sea
Raketvejen is a charming holiday home area on Denmark’s west coast, an old rescue road winding through the wide dune landscapes near Vester Husby. The route gives the holiday homes along the road a very special sense of tranquillity and authenticity. The area lies at the edge of the Husby Dune Plantation with open views across the dunes of the North Sea. The large natural plots along the road create a feeling of space and freedom that is difficult to find elsewhere.
Most of the holiday homes on Raketvejen are located only a few hundred metres from the North Sea beach. A short walk through the dunes is all it takes before you reach the water’s edge. The beach here is wide, open, and pleasantly peaceful. If you are travelling with your dog, there are few better places for a relaxing holiday by the sea.
Nature Right Outside Your Door
At the edge of the Husby Dune Plantation, you will find marked hiking trails, a forest playground, and a bathing lake with barbecue facilities, making it an ideal starting point for active family days in nature. The plantation offers a varied landscape of dunes, forests, and heathland where you may encounter deer, hares, and a rich variety of birdlife.
Cyclists can follow the West Coast Cycle Route, part of one of the world’s longest cycling routes, which passes directly through the area. Horse riders will also appreciate the 16 kilometres of marked riding trails nearby.
A Name with History
Did you know that Raketvejen got its name from a time when the sea could decide between life and death?
During violent storms, when rescue boats could no longer be launched, the rocket rescue apparatus transported along this very road became the final hope for stranded sailors. A line would be fired towards the wrecked ship, and the crew members were brought safely ashore one by one. Local residents stood ready to help in every kind of weather, day and night. Over time, more than 300 sailors owed their lives to this rescue equipment and the courage of the local helpers.
Today, you are greeted only by silence, nature, and the sound of the waves, but the history still lives on in the landscape.
What the Surroundings Have to Offer
The fishing village of Thorsminde lies around 10 kilometres to the north and is home to Denmark’s first shipwreck museum, a fascinating excursion for the whole family. To the south, you will find the holiday resort of Søndervig with cafés, restaurants, shops, and a wide range of activities for children and adults alike, including a water park, indoor play centre, and much more.
If you are in the mood for shopping and charming streets, the town of Ringkøbing is located around 25 kilometres away. Holstebro, with its many shopping opportunities, can be reached in approximately 35 kilometres.
Vester Husby and Raketvejen are not destinations for nightlife or busy shopping weekends. But if you are looking for a family-friendly place filled with peace, nature, and the sound of the North Sea, then this is exactly the right place for you.
