WOW PARK in Skjern and Billund: The Wildest Play and Adventure Park in the Forest

What makes it work is the philosophy behind it. Nearly every attraction in both parks is powered by terrain, gravity and the trees themselves. That means no engine noise, no screens and no waiting in line. Children set their own pace and their own level of daring, which is exactly why the park works just as well for a cautious five year old as it does for a fearless twelve year old.

Underground Caves and Willow Mazes

Not everyone loves heights, and WOW PARK has thought about that. Below ground, a network of narrow tunnels and caves winds through the earth, dimly lit and just tall enough for children to scramble through on hands and knees. Parents can usually follow, though not always with much dignity.

Back at surface level, the willow mazes challenge the whole family to find a way out. They look harmless from the entrance. They are not. Expect at least one wrong turn and a lot of laughing.

Between these you will find ziplines running low across the forest floor, giant swings, rope ladders and a water play area, which is a genuine relief on a warm July afternoon.

Meet the Goats

After all that running around, there is a quieter corner of the park that children gravitate towards without being told. Old Villy, cheeky Frida and little Mads are the resident goats, and they are entirely happy to be fed handfuls of grass and stroked behind the ears. It is the natural halfway point of the day, right when small legs need a break and parents need a coffee.

EDDERKOPPEN, The Spider, in WOW PARK Skjern

Opened in 2024, EDDERKOPPEN is the wildest attraction on the west coast and the main reason to choose Skjern over Billund if you want the bigger thrill. You climb 110 metres of hanging net bridges through the treetops, working your way steadily higher, and then you drop. The free fall slide sends you down from 20 metres. It is over in seconds and most people go straight back round for a second run.

Danes call it Edderkoppen because of the web of nets you cross to reach the top. Worth knowing before you go: it is genuinely high, so if anyone in your group is unsure, walk the lower section first and decide from there.

GIGANTEN in WOW PARK Billund: Feel Your Stomach Drop

Billund answers with GIGANTEN, Scandinavia's tallest free fall slide tower. The tower stands 25 metres high and you earn the view by climbing 112 steps to the top. From there you choose between three slides: Lynet (the Lightning), a 20 metre free fall drop, Skovræset (the Forest Race) and Spiralen (the Spiral).

Even if nobody in your family is brave enough to take the plunge, the climb is worth it on its own. From the platform you look straight out across the treetops of Sønderjylland, and on a clear day it is one of the best views in the area.

Food for Hungry Adventurers

Sooner or later every forest explorer runs out of fuel. Both parks have a child friendly place to eat: Madladen in Billund and Skovcaféen in Skjern, both serving snacks, hot food and cold drinks.

You are also completely free to bring your own. This is one of the most family friendly things about WOW PARK, and one of the most Danish. Grills are available at the bonfire area, so you can pack sausages and bread rolls from the local Brugsen on the way and cook your own lunch in the woods.

Do not skip the bålhygge. In the hammock grove and around the fire pits you can toast marshmallows, pop popcorn over the flames and twist snobrød, the Danish campfire bread wrapped around a stick, over the embers. For most children this ends up being their favourite half hour of the entire day.

Good to Know Before You Go

A few practical things that will make your visit smoother:

• Prices: From DKK 199 per person for ages 3 and up. Children under 3 go free in both parks. An annual pass costs DKK 499, which pays for itself in roughly two visits, worth considering if you come to Denmark regularly. Remember that your 35% Esmark discount applies to gate tickets only.

• Opening hours: Both parks are open most days in season, typically from 10:00 to 17:00. Hours vary by month and by park, so check the current calendar before you set off.

• How long to stay: Plan for a full day. Four to six hours is normal, and families with children between 5 and 12 often stay right up to closing.

• What to wear: Old clothes and proper shoes. Trainers or hiking shoes, never sandals. There is sand, sawdust, water and mud, and everyone comes home filthy. Pack a full change of clothes in the car, especially for younger children.

• Rain: The forest canopy shelters a surprising amount, and Danish children play outside in almost any weather. A rainy day at WOW PARK is still a good day, just bring waterproofs. This makes it one of the most reliable options in your holiday planning when the North Sea weather turns.

• Dogs: Welcome in both parks, which is rarer than you might think among Danish attractions. If you have booked one of our holiday homes that allows dogs, your four legged family member can come along.

• Parking: Free at both parks. Accessible toilets and baby changing facilities are available.

Getting There From Your Esmark Holiday Home

WOW PARK Skjern sits inland from the coast and is the easy option from almost all of our west coast destinations. From Hvide Sande, Søndervig or Bjerregård you are looking at roughly 35 to 45 minutes by car. From Bork Havn or Ringkøbing it is closer to 20 to 25 minutes. That makes it a comfortable half day trip with time left for the beach afterwards.

WOW PARK Billund is around an hour inland from Blåvand, Vejers Strand and Henne Strand. Because it sits right beside LEGOLAND, most families combine it with a LEGO day rather than driving over for the park alone. A tip from us: do LEGOLAND in the morning and WOW PARK in the afternoon, when the LEGOLAND queues are at their worst and the forest is at its quietest.
