Fishing holidays in Denmark on the North Sea
As one of the oldest fishing companies in Denmark, the fishing industry is still very important for Hvide Sande. You notice this immediately when you are at the harbour in Hvide Sande, where both small and large fishing boats are still moored.

Every year, many holiday home guests flock to Hvide Sande to catch a few of the many herring that swim through the locks to spawn in spring.
Anglers in Denmark generally have a good chance of catching a variety of fish on the Holmsland Klit, as the headland is surrounded by water. Be it the North Sea, the Ringkøbing fjord or the many different put-and-take lakes that can be found here. A fishing holiday in Denmark can be perfectly organised in a holiday home or holiday flat here and does not necessarily have to take place on Funen or Bornholm.
Fishing at the herring festival
Every year, on the last weekend in April, Hvide Sande hosts the Herring festival (Sildefestival). People from different nations meet here to choose the herring angler of the year.
There will also be other entertainment during the competition. For example, the announcement of Mr Herring, a performance by the local gymnastics club, fish cakes and fried herring, live music in the tent and the chance to win lots of exciting prizes.

In 1999, 1,467 kilos of herring were caught during the competition; in the same year, a German participant caught 313 herring in one hour.
The Herring Festival is an annual tradition that usually takes place on the last weekend in April.
Combine fishing in Denmark with a holiday in a holiday home
After a long day on the put and take lake or at the lock, you can fillet your freshly caught fish in your holiday home or holiday flat. Many holiday homes for anglers have an extra sink outside where you can fillet and clean the fish.
Besides, there's nothing better than catching your own dinner and preparing it at a barbecue in the evening while watching the sunset on the terrace of your fishing lodge in Denmark.
Fish species: Denmark is a paradise for anglers
Herring, flounder, eel, perch, mullet, trout, mackerel, cod, Hornpike. The list of the many different fish species at Holmsland Klit is long. In the North Sea there are many different salt fish that approach the coast and if you want to go to the other side of the headland, there are other exciting fish species for anglers in the Ringkøbing fjord.

Fishing licence for your holiday in Denmark
In Denmark, anyone between the ages of 18 and around 67 (Danish retirement age) needs a Fishing licence from the Danish Fisheries Agency, in order to public waters to be allowed to fish. You can easily obtain a Danish sport fishing licence online on the German-language website of the Danish Fisheries Agency “Fiskeristyrelsen” buy.
The fishing licence can be purchased as a daily, weekly or annual permit. If you want to fish for longer than a week or visit Denmark several times a year, it is worth buying an annual fishing licence for sport fishermen.
Fishing in the harbour of Hvide Sande
If you want to fish in Hvide Sande at the lock, in the harbour or on the pier, you need a special harbour fishing permit. Children under the age of 13 fish for free, all others must pay for this card. You can buy them here buy online.
The proceeds from the sale of these cards will be used to improve the fishing spots, such as the floating bridge for anglers at the lock, and to support the sport fishing centre with facilities such as a cleaning table, smoke oven, picnic house and toilets.
The operation of the locks has a significant influence on your fishing opportunities in the harbour. As soon as the gates are open, the current increases, which makes fishing more difficult. To ensure the required salinity in the Ringkøbing fjord, it may be necessary to open the lock gates during the day. However, their daily operation depends heavily on water levels and rainfall and is almost impossible to predict. You can check the current operating status of the lock at any time on hyde.dk view.
Coastal fishing
Shore fishing is becoming more and more popular. Here you fish directly on the beach, with a slightly stronger and longer rod to be able to cast the lure far enough out into the water. This type of fishing is different and exciting, and the surroundings of the sea do the rest.
The other members of the family can also enjoy themselves here, for example by flying kites, building sandcastles, swimming or playing ball games. But be careful when fishing that you really catch fish and not the other family members!
HoLake fishing in Denmark
The Solea is a newly renovated cutter, modern and safely equipped. In the summer season, the cutter sails out into the North Sea every day, where it mainly catches cod, coalfish and mackerel. The fish can be gutted on board and thrown onto the ice to keep it fresh.
Various tours are offered. The short tour is suitable for smaller children or beginners, while the longer tour is more suitable for more experienced anglers who have the necessary leisure time for their fishing holiday.
Tanks are attached to the cutter so that it doesn't rock too much, and you can also hire fishing rods on board. So everything has been thought of.
